Boxes & Cartons - FAQ

Q. What is corrugated cardboard?

A. Corrugated cardboard is corrugated fiberboard. Cardboard is a generic term that includes all types of heavy-duty paper that can include card stock, paperboard and corrugated fiberboard. Corrugated cardboard is made by gluing a flat sheet of paper to a corrugated fluted sheet of paper.

Q. What is the difference between single, double and triple wall corrugated cardboard?

A. Single Wall Board is the most common style of manufactured corrugated cardboard and consists of one fluted medium between two sheets of linerboard.

Double Wall Board has two fluted mediums sandwiched between three sheets of linerboard and is a lot stronger than the Single Wall Board and is much more resistant to breaking when stacked. Double Wall Board is commonly used for larger industrial containers.

Triple Wall Board is strong enough to be a substitute for wooden crates. It has traditionally been used for shipping chemical containers.

Q. How do I measure a box?

A. To ensure a snug and protective fit around the contents of the box, box measurements always correspond to the inner dimensions. Measure the length, width and depth (height) of what you need to pack and express the measurements in millimetres. Dimensions should be in the order of length, width and depth.

Q. What is FEFCO?

A. The European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO) is a non-profit organisation representing the interests of the industry across Europe.

Headquartered in Brussels, FEFCO was established in 1952 and is the European umbrella organisation of the corrugated Board Industry.

The role of the Federation is to investigate economic, financial, technical and marketing issues of interest to the corrugated packaging industry, to analyse all factors which may influence the industry, and to promote and develop its image.
